Current Situation:
For those of you who have read my last post, I stated that I was having difficulties in my pregnancy. Jacob and I discussed long and hard whether I should post a blog about this or just keep it private. We recently decided that we would let everyone know what was going on now rather than wait for our next newsletter and ask for your prayers on this issue. Let me start by saying that although this is considered a complication it is NOT a huge deal and should have no long term impact on the baby if we keep it controlled.
About a week ago, Jacob and I found out that I have gestational diabetes. From what we have been told this means that little Alethea could be not so little when she is born. My body is not able to make enough insulin to support my growing placenta which requires me to be on a strict diet and tracking my blood 4 times a day. If uncontrolled the risk is that Alethea could be 10lbs (or larger) and too big to deliver vaginally and also be born with sugar in her body that she can not process herself. Again, there are NO long terms affects of this.
We have prayed about this and are at peace with what we have to do, but it is still difficult. One of the biggest difficulties has been the unknown and quick changes that have occurred. I took the 3 hour glucose test on Thursday (September 1), found out I had diabetes on Friday and was signed up for the diabetes class on Wednesday. After attending the 3.5 hr class at the perinatal center (high risk pregnancy center at the hospital) I was given a new diet (approved by a dietitian) and regulations as to what my sugar numbers should be. After the weekend of testing we found out that I would need to be on medicine to regulate some of my numbers. Again this is not a big deal, but being (almost) 34 weeks pregnant this was all an emotional roller coaster. Although I had made peace with having GD (gestational diabetes) finding out that I couldn't control it and would have to be medicated has been really hard for me to handle. I have been having the typical emotional ups and downs of pregnancy lately and this just made it a little bit worse. Things have been going well for all of us, just a little hard with all the unknowns.
What the Future Holds:
- weekly appointments with my OBGYN (normal for this far along in the pregnancy)
- bi-weekly (or 3 times week) appointments at the perinatal center for fetal monitoring
- more detailed monitoring of Alethea's size and weight
-if Alethea becomes too big, too small, or is having trouble then I will be induced early
-Most likely will NOT go past 39 weeks and will be induced
-Should still be able to have a vaginal delivery but there is an increased chance that I will have a c-section
Wednesday will be my first day of fetal monitoring, which I am starting to get excited about. Of course it will be a pain to drive 20mins each way to the hospital and be monitored for 30+ minutes, but I will get to hear our baby! We meet with the high risks doctors early next week and should know a little bit more then but most likely we will only know things day by day as I attend appointments. We will make sure to keep everyone updated. Jacob and I would ask for your prayers that we are able to control Alethea's weight and carry her as long as I can. I am now considered to be high risk so we ask for prayers for Alethea's and mines health and safety throughout the rest of the pregnancy. So this is what happens....
... when you get up at 5am:
-a bowl of cereal bright and early (this means I will most definitely be having second breakfast today)
-responding to messages on facebook, that have been there for almost a week
- becoming creative and all of a sudden feeling the need for a new blog template and design (what do you think?)
- a new blog post (twice in a week who would have thought?)
- a new page on our blog! You should go check out the NEW and UPDATED "about us" page
What next, I'm not sure. Since it is not yet 7am on a Saturday I have no idea what I will be up to next. My loving hubby is sleeping next to me in bed while Wallace is curled in between (his favorite spot). There is a lot I can do today, but most of it involves making noise and since I am not inclined to wake my husband, or everyone else in our apartment complex I think I might catch up on some blogs, reading, or just browsing for baby stuff on the computer. Anybody have some good ideas for the time when they wake up 3 hours before they usually do? This is a new occurrence to me, and something that NEVER use to happen. I use to wake up, look at the clock and happily fall back asleep until I HAD to get out of bed. Now I seem to wake up, go the bathroom, glance at the clock and think "really I have how many hours until I can wake up?!?!?". But alas, today I got up super early. Maybe that means I will fall back asleep soon and take a mid-morning nap? I'm not sure, we will have to see. Anyways, since I have rambled on enough in this blog, bright and early on a Saturday morning, I will leave you to the rest of your day, or start of your day if you are just waking up. :)

29 weeks!
7 months pregnant! I still can't believe that 7 months ago we found out that we were having a child. This day seemed so far away at the time and now it is already here and moving fast. Although our baby is not due until the end of October, it is in both of our minds that she could come any day now. I have been working on organizing the house a bit more in hopes that it will be easier once she arrives, while Jacob has been studying like crazy for his Hebrew exam. Alithea's crib is set up as well as her swing and car seat. We are so excited for her arrival but are praying that she doesn't arrive for another 10 weeks.
Total Weight Gain: not sure I really want to say this anymore...
Maternity Clothes: All the time
Gender: Girl!!
Movement: I have been able to kinda figure out her schedule and when she is awake or asleep based on her movement. There are now certain times during the day when you can see her moving inside my belly. So exciting!
What I miss: being able to move around quickly
Cravings: Chocolate!! I can't believe how much I have been craving chocolate! I could eat it all day for every meal, I just can't get enough.
Symptoms: Not sleeping to well, and being hot ALOT! but other then that things have been great.
Best Moment this week: Going to our Drs. apt and getting to see Alithea on the ultra sound. :)

23 Weeks!
We are almost to 6 months. Who would have thought the time would go buy so fast! I can't believe we only have a few months left before our baby girl will be here.
Total Weight Gain: +15 lbs... wow have I really gained that much??
Maternity Clothes: :) They are wonderful
Gender: Girl!!
Movement: Lots! It is so neat feeling her move all over the place and already learning what times of day she is most active. So far she moves the most at night (9-11pm) and early morning... hopefully this will change once she is here. It is wonderful to share this with Jacob since he can feel her kicking as well and says he can see her moving in my belly.
What I miss: being able to sleep for more then 2 hrs at a time
Cravings: Nothing particular.. just trying to eat a lot of food... if i'd have to chose i'd say more sweets then usual and less chips
Symptoms: I am feeling great! Other than being tired in the middle of the day and taking a nap I feel wonderful!
Best Moment this week: Buying a memory book/photo album to record all of our daughter's firsts
Jacob's Note:
I think enjoying food has become a more frequent occasion since our baby coming. The lasagna taste better, the Oreo cake taste better, the Brots taste better, just about everything tastes better....maybe that is because I'm eating more of it all!

5 Month Appointment!
Once again I am behind on posting. I purposley did not write a post for 20 weeks because I knew we would be seeing our doctor the next week and wanted to wait and share new from our appointment. Well, after our doctors appointment my mother left town and went back home, and my sister came to town. It was such a fun weekend but was crazy busy! So here I am, over a week late with our update about "little Toman".
Everything went great at our 5 month appointment. We had the privilege of seeing our baby on the ultrasound and were able to find out if it was a boy or girl. (stay tuned and you too will know) It was so much fun seeing our child in real life and being able to put a face to our child. From the looks of it, Jacob and I think our child will have a nose like Jacob ( it looked big on the screen) and some tendencies from me. Our child was crossing his/her ankles in our ultra sound. How cute!! Just like mom does all the time!
Now I think you all have waited long to enough to find out... that we are expecting a Girl!!! We are so thrilled that we will have a little baby girl in our house! Jacob's response when finding out we are having a girl was rather protective as he already has inherited "Anti-Boys" attitude. Don't you love him? He will be such a great daddy to our little girl and will make sure to protect from those "mean-stinky-bad-boys".
Total Weight Gain: +8 lbs
Maternity Clothes: I don't fit in regular pants anymore :)
Gender: Girl!! (she weighs 13 ounces)
Movement: mostly felt at night or right after I eat
What I miss: Hot Dogs!! Who isn't craving a hot dog during baseball season?
Cravings: sometimes ice cream sometimes chips just depends on the time of day
Symptoms: some lower back pain but not much
Best Moment this week: Finding out we are having a girl and seeing her on the ultra sound
Jacob's Note:
Wallace is getting excited for our little girl! We already have set up the "baby corner" in our bedroom, and with the help of family our home is decorated and baby-prepped. Wallace has sniffed, barked at, and cuddled with nigh everything that we have gotten. Thankfully we have had help very early in this pregnancy and have been able to allow Wallace (and all of us) to get used to the new arrangement of the house. He has sniffed the baby carrier, sniffed the crib, sniffed all the baby clothes, and cuddled up with some of the babies toys already.
Meanwhile I have already tripped, fallen, kicked, run into, and bumbled into basically all of the babies things. I now realize the reason why so many baby items are built so tough, (not because the baby will play with them rough) because their big over sized clumsy daddy will no doubt make his best effort to destroy them via tripping, falling, kicking, running into, etc.
I am so glad that when I trip, make a noise, or run into the crib at night, it's before the baby is here and sleeping. Hopefully we will all get used to everything by the time Little Baby gets here

19 Weeks!
How Far Along: 19 Weeks! Almost 5 months!
Total Weight Gain: +5 lbs
Maternity Clothes: Loving the stretchy pants!
Gender: will find out in a little over a week.... stay tuned
Movement: the baby feels like a "lava lamp". I can feel him/her the most in the evening when I am relaxing after work. Jacob has also been able to feel the baby moving a few times!! We are so excited!
What I miss: drawing a blank today...
Cravings: Food! Mostly salty, crunchy food
Symptoms: back aches but mostly I have a lot of energy :)
Best Moment this week: having my friend notice that I have a baby bump!

I think the most exciting thing about this whole process so far has been the actual realization of the reality that is. Thats a really 'jacob' way of saying-wow everything is becoming real. From seeing the baby on the monitor, to hearing the heartbeat, to dealing with everyday little happenings with Amy, it is really great to experience this reality that I am a part of.

18 weeks!
We are 18 weeks! Who would have thought that this day would come so fast. In only a few short weeks we will find out if we are having a boy or a girl. We are soo excited!! This will be a quick update without pictures, but I promise there will be another post early this week with pictures from our baby shower and trip to Michigan.
How Far Along: 18 Weeks!
Total Weight Gain: + 5 lbs
Maternity Clothes: I would say most of my wardrobe is now maternity clothes
Gender: will know in 2 1/2 weeks!!!
Movement: A little bit of popcorn, fluttery movement but only if I sit really still and quiet

I love traveling with my wife! It always means time together away from our "distractions". We have nothing but the radio, our dog, and the road to interfere with our conversation and time together. Even if we have to stop more now during road trips because of Little Toman I don't mind, it just means more time together and more funny Rests stop Stories

4 Month Dr. Apt!
We just wanted to write a quick update to let everyone know that everything is going GREAT with the baby! We are so thankful God found us the doctor that He did. As many of you know Amy is prone to worrying and although this is something she has been working on, it is very hard NOT to worry when stuff is unknown. And there are plenty of unknowns that come with pregnancy. Worrying has been something that She has done throughout this entire pregnancy. "Do I need to lay on my side", and "is it ok to be lifting babies", and "my toe fell asleep is that ok?" have all been questions these first four months. With all this worrying, she hardly ever brings anything up to our doctor because lets just face it, we know everything is in God's hands and that "I really am OK". Well today Amy asked the doctor about her back pain and was told "yep its normal" but that we should "buy a maternity belt to help since you lift kids all day". And then my wonderful doctor goes on to pretty much disintegrate the myths we have heard about pregnancy and told us to not listen to all the different opinions I am receiving and just listen to what she tells us to do. She doesn't just say this but laughs it off and is constantly making jokes. Her smile, cheerfulness, and helpful attitude have really been a blessing from the Lord! We are soooo thankful that we found a doctor that has done nothing to scare us or cause unneeded worry. The words "Your not disabled, your pregnant" are often spoken by our doctor and it is very reassuring. This has helped us (but Amy in particular) to not worry and has allowed Amy to fully enjoy her pregnancy.
When we came home, our little puppy "Wawa" (affectionately named by a little one we know) greeted us with great enthusiasm. Jacob went up to Amy and began making the noise of what the baby's heartbeat sounded like through the ultrasound machine.
"Wone wone wone wone wone" went Jacob.
Of course Wallace (Wawa) took this as an invitation to play and quickly jumped all over both of us! How funny that our puppy is already interacting with the sounds our little baby is making, even if those sounds are poorly recreated through a rumbling, bumbling, daddy.
Hooray for little Toman!
When we came home, our little puppy "Wawa" (affectionately named by a little one we know) greeted us with great enthusiasm. Jacob went up to Amy and began making the noise of what the baby's heartbeat sounded like through the ultrasound machine.
"Wone wone wone wone wone" went Jacob.
Of course Wallace (Wawa) took this as an invitation to play and quickly jumped all over both of us! How funny that our puppy is already interacting with the sounds our little baby is making, even if those sounds are poorly recreated through a rumbling, bumbling, daddy.

Believe it or not-I'm excited to change diapers, be awake at 2 in the morning, and go for walks with our baby. We have been semi-prepared for all those things with Wallace....well.....not diapers, but definitely poop.

15 weeks
Wow I can't believe it is 15 weeks! It seems like only yesterday we found out we were expecting and now we are almost 4 months along! Being pregnant has been so wonderful and we are so excited to continue this journey. I would like to thank everyone who has been praying for us and for our child. I have been starting to feel the aches and effects of pregnancy on my body and have even started to show. (although I have a little "bump" it looks more like I've gained a ton of weight than a baby)

Maternity Clothes: of course :) at least for pants, why wouldn't I want to be comfortable? (although they are still too big)

Sleep: I'm up every few hours going potty but other then that I've been sleeping a lot and taking LOTS of naps. (something I NEVER did)
What I miss: Mountain Dew
Cravings: nothing particular just wanting to eat all the time
Symptoms: just overall achy (but that might be from taking care of infants all day), very tired and a little moody
Best Moment this week: Getting our ultrasound picture (last week) and telling all our friends and family!!

Weekly Updates
Hey everyone! By now I am guessing you have all heard the news that we are expecting our first "little Toman". We thought it would be fun to keep everyone updated on a weekly basis about how everything is going, and something that would be fun for us to have throughout the pregnancy. My goal is to post every Friday (since that is exactly __weeks). I hope you will all enjoy sharing in our pregnancy with us. We are so excited to have all the support and love from everyone. Big News in a Little Body
Brothers and Sisters, Friends and Supporters, God has given us a wonderful gift. This gift is small, and at the moment only is 2 centimeters long, but this little gift will, with God’s grace, grow into a child ready to burst onto the scene of this present world. We were able to go to a local physician who gave us the wonderful news that Amy and Jacob are having a baby!
We have both had much cause for joy and sorrow throughout our relationship. Even through our early marriage we have had ups and downs. Many of you have been with us and shared in our mutual happiness and sadness. We invite you to share in the joy of this wonderful gift of God by praising Him and celebrating His goodness. As Romans 12:15 says “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn”. Praise God for a time of rejoicing!
Of course a baby means we will need all sorts of prayers, both for us to be strong during these next months, (and the rest of our lifetime), and for our unborn child. There are all sorts of wonderful little details that the Lord will no doubt figure out in His own time. Prayer for us during those times when we are trying to figure out those little details is absolutely needed.
